dancing through covid
we created this piece through the pandemic covid 19, during the year 2020. all the company members recorded themselves at different stages with the goal of documenting and sharing this painful and historic process with you. we wrap up with hope. 
at the time of this release (12/2020) we are still in the pandemic. 
this piece is dedicated to Etienne Hernández.

cañaveral
we created this piece as a homage to the strength and resilience of our Borikua people. el cañaveral (sugar cane plantation) is still a symbol of sweat and tears to make ends meet. yet, it also invokes the sweetness of our people, the sacrifices made, and the resilience we hold to keep on going in the midst of (and against) colonialism. 
notes: 
mar parrilla was inspired by her father Marcelino Parrilla (and his family) who was born and raised working in a sugar cane plantation in Río Grande, Borikén.

this piece was originally created as a celebration of passion, tenderness, and true love in the midst of pain. created in 2019, it still resonates today (2020)- maybe even more. there is much trouble in the world... yes, we are isolated and live in uncertainty. but we keep our hope high, and long to experience that tenderness again. we will.

Llegamos! Pero, llegamos? / We arrived! But, did we?
Do you know that feeling when you’ve arrived to the  place you wanted to go but all of a sudden you are not sure if you did? You start looking around with the conviction and confidence you are at the right place. But when you start looking in detail you realize you are not but you decide to keep exploring and see what happens...
¿Sabes de ese sentimiento cuando llegas al lugar que tenías pensado llegar pero, de repente, te das cuenta que no estás seguro si lo hiciste? Empiezas a mirar alrededor con convicción y seguridad de que estas en el sitio indicado. Pero cuando miras al detalle, te das cuenta de que no lo estás, pero aún así decides seguir explorando a ver qué pasa...

Esta pieza explora la confusión, rareza e incomodidad de un ser humano que se encuentra en encierro debido a tiempos pandémicos. Dentro de esta circunstancia se va distorsionando su entorno y realidad, desvaneciendo la dicotomía que separa lo imaginario de lo concreto.

La ventana es fuga, pero su mirada no permite verla ni verse por dentro. Es una reflexión al encierro forzoso y a la condición de colonizada. La pared es la fuerza, pero es el bounce-back desde donde se mira hasta que logra verse en la mirada de la otra. Atravesada.

En la orilla de la Mar con mi familia sentada en un circulo. ¿Soy Bravata? La primera vez que me parí por la boca fue cuando le compartí a mami y papi mi interés en personas de mi mismo sexo también. Aunque esto no fue mi intención, así fue cómo sucedió. Este espacio liminal ha sido uno de encuentros, despedidas, sanación, pesca, ritual. Fue por dónde primero infectaron de colonización el cuerpo de la isla Borikén. En este trabajo audio-visual repienso símbolos y rituales que heredo de mis ancestrxs. Mediante la ejecución de este ritual (III)ntento evocar la resiliencia, calma e iluminación que iniciaron y pusieron en movimiento mis ancestras Taínas y Afrocubanas a pesar de la sofocante opresión por el aparato colonial en el caribe.The sands of time are dissolving and sinking. Esto es producido por la corrosión en las costas de Puerto Rico mientras incrementa la crisis inminente de calentamiento global que inició el hombre blanco en la tierra.

Avoiding unnecessary planification as a way to commit myself with contemplating the present, and all its dimensions. ¿Cómo puedo convertir el azar in a language que me permita iniciar una comunicación efectiva con un cuerpo de agua? How deep can I enter your body? Can I give birth to myself inside your womb?

en ruinas
Borikén ha batallado contra la colonización desde el año 1493 cuando los colonizadores españoles amenazaron la isla. En el 1508, Ponce de León estableció Caparra, convirtiendo el pantano en el primer asentamiento colonial en la isla . Hoy las ruinas de esa ciudad han sido convertidas en un espacio arqueológico y quedan junto al Museo de la Colonia. A través de los años el estatus colonial ha dejado a muchas partes de Puerto Rico en ruinas. En esta video-pieza, a través de la improvisación, desarrollo la absurdidad, la destrucción y el abandono de parte de las instituciones que controlan nuestra tierra.
Borikén has battled against colonization since the year 1943 when the Spanish colonizers threatened the island. In 1508, Ponce de León established Caparra, turning the marsh into the first colonial settlement on the island. Today the site has been converted into an archeological site next to the Museum of the Colony. Throughout the years the colonial status has left many parts of Puerto Rico in ruins. In this dance film, through improvisation, I touch on the absurdity, destruction, and abandonment that the institutions that run our land have caused.
